TiVo users are probably experiencing an influx of email spam recently, with the TiVo email database having been compromised. Opt-in service provider Epsilon admits a breach in which email records from TiVo and other clients have been stolen.
Epsilon services around 2,500 clients and sends about 40 billion opt-in marketing emails each year. As its clients include TiVo, Citi, Capital One, Home Shopping Network, JPMorgan Chase and the like, email spammers are probably having a field day with their big catch.
Epsilon has admitted to a breach in which its database of email addresses has been compromised. As a result, users’ names and email addresses are now in possession of spammers who are either sending bulk unsolicited mail, or selling these addresses for a profit.
TiVo, for its part, has assured users that only names and email addresses were stolen, and users need not worry about financial information (like credit card information, for instance). Still, spammy emails might contain links to malicious websites, so if you’re a TiVo user, better play it safe.
